When you love to cook, and eat, you always appreciate salt. It can make, or break, a dish. I have played with salts from all over the world, everything from the banal Himalayan pink version to darker brown salt infused with red wine from Porto. However my favorite salts lurk in the snow-bound streets of Montreal.
Sel Saint-Laurent has a stunning lineup of salt fresh out of the local St. Lawrence River. The crystalline flakes are magical: some mixed with algae, others with umami flavors. Salt genie Manuel Bujold Richard harvests these flakes at dozens of meters below sea level. Sadly for now, they are only for sale in Canada or by calling the store.
From the minute I encountered these salts they changed my cooking and eating habits. So either order them by mail or head up to Montreal for some of the best food west of Paris!
